COPOPS' Fall 2006 Candidate Endorsements

Sen. Joan Fitz-Gerald, Senate District 16

Updated on September 19, 2006

Joan Fitz-Gerald

Joan Fitz-Gerald
Candidate
Senate District 16

Joan Fitz-Gerald is the President of the Colorado Senate – the first woman to hold the position. She has served in the Colorado Senate since 2000.

Senate President Fitz-Gerald's legislative priorities are creating a better economy for Colorado through increased tourism. She is particularly concerned about family issues such cost-of-living increases associated with rising insurance costs for home, auto and healthcare.

Her district includes Grand, Summit, Gilpin, Clear Creek, and parts of Boulder and Jefferson counties.

I sat on the Senate Education Committee from 2001-2003. I recognize how a strong maintenance of effort on the part of the state maintains Amendment 23 dollars. We can therefore use the money for enhancement that we promised the public. And I voted to increase pre-school slots, knowing that when our kids start early, they do better in the long run. I'm a strong proponent of our public schools, realizing that they serve all of our children, and that efforts on their behalf will pay off in years to come.
