With three sons, I consider myself both a veteran of and an advocate for our public school system. All of my children have gone through public schools and my involvement with them and support for them has not wavered over the years. My two oldest sons graduated from Arvada High School. My youngest attended Drake Middle School. I’ve lived in the area for more than two decades, and in that time, I’ve volunteered for numerous school-based groups including the PTA, the Arvada High School Boosters Club and the Accountability Committee at Vanderhoof Elementary School.

It was during those volunteer opportunities that I came to understand the real challenges that face our public schools. And I also came to understand the true struggles our public schools face in the funding arena. That’s why I dedicated time to what I believe were two extremely important political milestones for public education over the last five years. The first was Amendment 23 and the second was Referendum C. I worked hard to see the passage of both of these initiatives because I believe that they represent our best opportunity to fund our public schools appropriately. Amendment 23 was a chance to require the legislature to recognize the importance of education funding that recognized both adequate funding levels and realistic increases needed to meet inflation and population growth. Referendum C made the likelihood that those increases could stay in place even in times of economic downturn.

I was proud to work on those campaigns. Just as I’ve been proud to educate my sons in Arvada public schools. While it’s true that public schools have many challenges to face and ultimately, many changes to make, they are our best hope for the ongoing strength of America and the ultimate success of each of our children.
