I grew up in a small town in the Pennsylvania Dutch country. I attended public schools through high school graduation. The public schools were the center of the community, and Colorado is no different in that respect.
 
Our public schools are the first step in turning kids into citizens. In school, the kids get to know each other. They meet kids from very different backgrounds and begin the process of forming a cohesive community that includes everyone. It is vitally important for our public schools to provide the kind of quality education and welcoming environment that attracts participation from all the diverse social groups in our state.
