Education is our future. Colorado’s economy, health care system and quality of life all depend on an educated work force. Our work will not be finished until Colorado is the best place in the world to educate a child.

As a parent, a businessperson, and a community volunteer, I’ve spent my entire adult life working to improve public education. In 1988 I founded the Colorado I Have a Dream Foundation, a mentoring and scholarship program for at-risk kids; with the help of the foundation, the graduation rate among the targeted kids has tripled from 30 percent to 90 percent. As board chairman of the Colorado Children’s Campaign I worked on many education issues, and I led the charge to pass Amendment 23, which directly led to many more textbooks and lower class sizes in our schools. More recently, I was the founding president of Great Education Colorado, a group of passionate parents working to find creative ways to extend Amendment 23 funding. I think it is the responsibility of every Coloradan to support public education.

Colorado has amazing resources and we must put those to work in improving our educational system. There is no reason why our state cannot be the best place to educate a child. Working together, we can make it happen.
