I believe that the decisions we make now regarding the education of our youth will affect our children for a lifetime. It’s imperative that we provide early childhood education to all “at-risk” four and five-year olds so that they can start out on the same playing field as other children. We must ensure full funding for our children’s educations, including money for gifted and talented programs, special education programs, preschool programs, and new technology in classrooms. We need to reduce class sizes, utilize school-based decision-making, and recognize and reward the important contributions our teachers make. Finally, we must concentrate school funding on our public schools, recognizing that the use of vouchers will take critical funding away from public education.
